Two ways to turn product data into a catalogue. The difference shows when the layout gets hard.
Both build reusable catalogues from structured product data, export PDF and publish online. Catalog Machine assembles pages from layouts, grids and reusable product cards. cattalog.ai lets the pagination and the layout follow rules that read your data and the assistant writes those rules for you.
The differences that matter as the catalogue grows.
For a straightforward product grid, both get you to a finished catalogue. The gap opens once products stop fitting the same layout.

“Not described” means we did not find the capability in the linked public materials, not that it cannot exist. Catalog Machine is a capable visual catalog platform, and for repeatable layouts it does the job well. Check current plan details with each provider. Explore cattalog.ai features.
02 / The workflow
The real difference is how the layout is defined.
cattalog.aiDescribe how the document should behave
You describe the behaviour.
Attach your data and images, then say what should happen when products differ. The assistant writes the rule, the publication repaginates, and you read the result as real pages.
1Attach product data and images
2Describe the rule; the assistant implements it
3Inspect real pages, then export or publish
Strong when the structure varies. One rule can settle hundreds of pages, and it still applies to next season's data.
Import or create products, organise the database, pick a template and arrange pages in Catalog Designer. AutoGrid fills the repeated product grids for you.
1Import products and organise the database
2Choose a template and build product cards
3Arrange pages, then publish or export
Strong when the structure repeats. If most products carry the same fields and the catalogue is a regular grid, this is a direct and quick way to build it.
A grid tells products where to go. A rule decides what happens when they don't.
Picture a 600-page technical catalogue. Most products have one image, a short description and four specifications. Some have three images, fifteen specifications, variants and a compatibility table.
A fixed grid
Every product gets the same box. That works right up until a product carries more than the box was drawn for.
A page with rules
The product with the spec table takes the width it needs. The plain ones stay paired. Nothing splits that shouldn't.
These are not manual page edits. Each one is a rule the publication keeps, on this edition and on the next one.
Keep related content togetherKeep each product and its variants on the same page whenever possible.A variant group split across a spread
Avoid awkward breaksNever leave a product heading at the bottom of a page without its content. An orphan heading at a page foot
Change layout by contentProducts with more than eight specifications should use the detailed layout.A cramped card and a half-empty one
Vary the densityUse six products per page, but two per page when they have technical tables. One grid that suits neither product
Respect category boundariesEvery top-level category should start on a new page. Two categories colliding mid-page
Show only what existsOnly show the dimensions table when width, height and depth are available.Empty rows where data is missing
Continue tables properlyRepeat the table header when a specification table runs onto the next page.A headerless table on page two
Rebalance the pageRemove the category heading when it would leave an almost-empty page.A page holding one lonely product
Complex does not have to mean manual.
The publication underneath is real HTML, CSS and data transformations, and that is what makes these rules possible. You do not have to write any of it. Ask for “products with more than ten specifications need their own page” and the assistant changes the implementation. Anyone who wants to read or edit that implementation directly still can.
03 / AI
Both have AI. They point it at different things.
This is not an AI versus no-AI comparison. Catalog Machine's AI Concierge imports products and creates catalogs from conversations, spreadsheets, websites, images and PDFs.
AI that fills the catalogue.
AI Concierge is aimed at getting products in and getting a catalog built; a real head start when you are beginning from scattered sources.
Product import
Catalog creation
cattalog.ai
AI that works on the pages.
The assistant reaches further down into the transformations, the template and the layout rules then back up to the paginated result to check its own work.
1You describe the layout problem
2The assistant reads the implementation
3It changes the document rules
4The publication repaginates
5It captures and inspects the pages
6It revises what still looks wrong
The question is not “can AI make a catalogue?”
It is whether AI can reason about the document after it has been paginated. A template can look correct and the data can look correct while page 347 still pushes the next product onto an almost-empty page 348. That only becomes visible once the pages exist, so the assistant renders them, looks, and fixes the rule behind the problem.
04 / Publishing
One publication. Every output it needs to be.
Both platforms go beyond PDF. The difference is the direction each one travels: one publication into many formats, or one catalogue into a storefront.
Digital PDF
For downloads, email and the sales team's laptop.
Professional print PDF
CMYK, ICC profiles, 300 DPI, bleed and crop marks for the printer.
Interactive flipbook
A page-turn viewer readers can move through in the browser.
Shareable link
Send the published catalogue to a customer without an attachment.
Website embed
Drop the published catalogue into a page on your own site.
The layout is not rebuilt for each channel: the same publication produces all of them.
Catalog Machine goes somewhere we don't.
Alongside online catalogs and embedding, it offers product Showrooms with browsing, search and filtering, plus quote requests, ordering and Stripe payments. The honest framing is not online versus offline it is a publication workflow next to a product-commerce workflow. If the catalogue itself has to take orders, that is a real reason to choose them.
05 / Pricing
Different products. Different pricing models.
Catalog Machine is self-service software. cattalog.ai is software plus a publication built around your data on paid plans.
cattalog.ai

The monthly plan runs the workspace. The one-time fee builds the publication your data needs.

No cap on products. A catalogue holds as many rows as your spreadsheet does. Plans meter catalogues, exports and media, not the size of your range.
Billed monthly, in USD. No annual contract to sign before you start.
The one-time fee buys the rules. We design the template to your brief and set up the layout and pagination logic against your own data. The Free plan has no fee at all.
USD launch rates for the first 100 customers. Media files and AI credits are per plan; products are not counted at all.
Their tiers are drawn around the size of your range. Ours are not: the number of products in a catalogue is simply the number of rows you attached.
$59/mo1,000
$184/mo6,000
$199/mo10,000
Any planNo cap
At $199 a month their top tier stops at 10,000 products and 50 catalogs. Your spreadsheet does not stop there — and neither does the catalogue built from it. cattalog.ai plans do have limits, but they are on catalogues, exports and media files rather than on how big your range is allowed to be.
Compare the work that comes back, not just the licence.
For a straightforward catalogue, self-service software is cheaper and entirely sufficient. For a complicated one, the subscription is the small number. The question worth asking is how many exceptions you fix by hand, how many pages need checking, and how much of that returns every single time the data changes.
06 / Make the choice
Choose by how complicated the publication can get.
Both produce a catalogue. What differs is what has to be in place before the first page exists.
cattalog.aiChoose this
Your products don't all fit one layout.
Different products carry different amounts of information.

07 / Questions
Before you switch.
Practical answers about layouts, AI, publishing and getting started.
What is a good alternative to Catalog Machine?
cattalog.ai is an alternative for teams whose layouts have to react to the product data. Catalog Machine suits catalogues built from straightforward visual layouts, Product Cards and product grids, and it adds a product database, showrooms and ordering around them. cattalog.ai is built for publications where the layout itself follows rules: conditional layouts, keep-together behaviour, page-break logic and complex tables. Both export PDF and publish online.
Is cattalog.ai harder to use because it exposes HTML, CSS and JavaScript?
Not in normal use. Those power the publication underneath, but you describe changes to the assistant in plain language: “keep each product with its variants and start every category on a new page.” The assistant implements the document logic. The underlying files stay available for anyone who wants precise control, but nobody has to open them to make a catalogue.
Which is better for a simple product catalogue?
If your products all follow the same shape and the catalogue is a regular grid of cards, Catalog Machine is a strong, quick fit, that is what its Product Cards and AutoGrid are designed for. cattalog.ai builds the same catalogues, but its advantage only really shows once the layout has exceptions.
Which is better for a complex product catalogue?
cattalog.ai is built for data-driven publications where layout and pagination respond to the content: technical catalogues, products with variable specifications, large variant groups, conditional layouts, complex tables and category page rules. No head-to-head performance benchmark is claimed here; test your own data in both.
Can cattalog.ai stop products breaking across pages?
Yes. The template and pagination rules control what is allowed to break. A publication can keep a product with its related content, avoid a particular break, or push the whole product to the next page when it cannot fit safely. The exact behaviour is configured for your publication.
Can the layout change depending on the product data?
Yes. The template and transformation layer read the product data to decide what is rendered and how. Products with technical tables can use a different layout from plain ones, featured products can take a full-width treatment, and optional sections can appear only when the matching data exists.
Does Catalog Machine have AI?
Yes. Catalog Machine provides AI Concierge for AI-assisted product import and catalog creation, from sources including conversations, CSV and Excel files, websites, images and PDFs. This is not an AI versus no-AI comparison. The difference is where the AI reaches: cattalog.ai’s assistant also works on the publication’s own layout rules and can inspect the pages after they have been paginated.
Can both platforms publish catalogues online?
Yes. cattalog.ai publishes the catalogue as an interactive page-turn flipbook with a shareable link, and it can be embedded in your own website. Catalog Machine also offers hosted online catalogs with embedding, and extends further into showrooms and commerce.
Can customers order products through cattalog.ai?
No. Ordering and payments are not part of the cattalog.ai catalogue workflow. Catalog Machine supports quote requests, orders and Stripe payments. If the catalogue itself needs to work as a lightweight commerce system, Catalog Machine is the better fit.
Which platform is better for Shopify catalogues?
Catalog Machine has a native Shopify import and re-import workflow, so it is the simpler fit when Shopify is your main product source. cattalog.ai connects to ecommerce, PIM or ERP systems through a custom integration we build for you, but Shopify is not a standard self-service source today.
Which platform is better for professional print?
cattalog.ai includes CMYK output, ICC profiles, 300 DPI settings, bleed and crop marks. Catalog Machine offers high-quality PDF export with configurable settings. If the catalogue is going into a commercial prepress workflow, take your printer’s exact output specification and test it in both. cattalog.ai’s Free plan gives you 1 export a month to try it with.
How does pricing compare?
cattalog.ai Pro is $149 a month plus a one-time $500 template design fee, and Business is $299 a month plus $1,250. That one-time fee covers a custom catalogue template designed to your brief, including the layout and pagination rules your data needs. Catalog Machine is self-service with no setup fee, listing $59, $184 and $199 a month at the time of review. The difference to watch is what the plan meters: their tiers cap products at 1,000, 6,000 and 10,000, while cattalog.ai puts no cap on products and meters catalogues and exports instead. Scopes differ and this is not a like-for-like quotation; check current plans with each provider.
Your data. Your first edition.
Your catalogue shouldn't break when your data stops being uniform.
Bring the spreadsheet and the images you already have. Describe how the publication should behave, let the assistant handle the document logic, then produce the next edition from the same rules.
This comparison is published by cattalog.ai, not an independent review. Catalog Machine information was reviewed from its public product pages, pricing page and documentation on 12 September 2026. Their prices and plan limits are quoted as published on that date and can change, so confirm them before deciding. We did not run a comparative performance test. “Not described” means we did not find the capability in the materials reviewed; it does not prove it is unavailable.
